“Do Pasto ao Prato”: app traces the origin of beef

The Do Pasto ao Prato app lets anyone scan the sanitary code printed on a meat package and check, in seconds, the social and environmental record of the plant that processed it. It draws on public data about deforestation, fire hotspots and enforcement actions, gathered into an open database that anyone can explore.
The data cover deforestation, fire hotspots and enforcement actions, drawn from public registries and cross-checked against the records sent in by the people who use the app. The reading is taken at the point of sale itself, in seconds, and feeds the same database behind the Retail Panel.
“The brand on the package does not identify the plant that produced it, and that is where the information is lost.”
