Privacy policy

Last updated: August 2026

Protecting your privacy matters to DO PASTO AO PRATO. We are committed to explaining clearly how we use your personal information. If you have any questions about how we handle your data or how we comply with data protection law, write to us at dopastoaoprato@trase.earth.

This Privacy Policy explains how DO PASTO AO PRATO handles the information collected through our app (available for iOS and Android) and our website, www.dopastoaoprato.com.br. By using the app or the website, or by providing us with information through them, you agree to the collection and use of that information as described in this policy.

DO PASTO AO PRATO is provided by Global Canopy, a not-for-profit organisation registered in England, with its registered office at 3 Frewin Chambers, Frewin Court, Oxford, OX1 3HZ, United Kingdom.

Global Canopy is the controller responsible for the processing of personal data collected by the DO PASTO AO PRATO app and website. We also count on the academic participation of UCLouvain, a Belgian university researching sustainable agribusiness and related topics.

The data protection officers are:

Erasmus zu Ermgassen, professor and researcher at UCLouvain, and co-founder of the DO PASTO AO PRATO initiative.

Helen Bellfield, Deputy Executive Director at Global Canopy

What information we collect and how we use it

We collect personal information when you create an account in the app and when you use the website.

1. Account data (app). When you create an account, we ask for your name and e-mail address, plus demographic information, which is optional. We use this information to keep you informed about the results of the initiative and about data collection, and to track our progress towards reaching a diverse user base. We never share or sell your personal information to third parties for marketing purposes.

2. Product scanning data (app). When you enter the label number of a beef product, we collect: the scanned meatpacking plant number; the product type (beef, chicken or pork); the name of the shop where the product was found; the phone's geographic coordinates at the time of the scan; a user identification number; and the app platform (iOS or Android). We use this information to improve transparency in the Brazilian beef supply chain, to study how products flow from production to sale, and to promote more sustainable cattle farming. We publish this data in aggregate form, never publicly linked to an identifiable user.

3. Cookies and browsing data (website). We use cookies and statistics tools to understand how visitors use our website. See the full details in our Cookie Policy.

4. Forms and dashboards (website). On the website, we collect personal data in three situations:

Newsletter sign-up: we collect only your e-mail address to send updates about the DO PASTO AO PRATO initiative. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in every e-mail, or by writing to dopastoaoprato@trase.earth.

Contact form: we collect your first name, surname, e-mail address, the company or organisation you work for, your role and the content of your message, so we can answer your request.

Raw data download from the dashboards: we collect your e-mail address and the company or organisation you work for, so we can understand who uses DO PASTO AO PRATO open data and keep you informed about relevant updates to it.

In all three cases, the legal basis is your consent, given when you fill in the respective form. We keep this data for as long as needed to fulfil the purposes above — as a rule, for as long as our communication with you lasts or for as long as you remain subscribed to the newsletter —, following the general retention criteria described in the “Data storage and security” section.

Newsletter and communications

When you create an account in the app, you are automatically subscribed to the DO PASTO AO PRATO newsletter, with updates on the project and on the results of data collection. If at any point you want to stop receiving these e-mails, use the unsubscribe link in every message, or write to dopastoaoprato@trase.earth. Unsubscribing from the newsletter does not close your app account.

Legal basis for processing your data

The legal basis for processing your personal data is set out in the Brazilian General Data Protection Law (LGPD, art. 7). Depending on the purpose, we rely on: consent (art. 7, I), for data provided when creating an account and for the newsletter; legitimate interest (art. 7, IX), to keep you informed and for security and service improvement; and research carried out by a research body (art. 7, IV), for product scanning data, processed preferably in aggregate form.

Third parties

We do not sell your personal data to third parties. We use Google Firebase, Google Analytics, and Microsoft Clarity as data processors — companies that process data on our behalf, under their own security policies. Microsoft Clarity helps us understand browsing behavior on the website through heatmaps and session recordings. This relationship may involve transferring data to servers located outside Brazil, always backed by the contractual protection mechanisms set out in the LGPD (Article 33).

Data storage and security

The personal data and product data collected by the app are stored in Google Firebase Realtime Database, protected by an authentication and authorisation system accessible only to the app developers. We maintain technical and organisational measures to protect your data against unauthorised access, loss or improper alteration.

We keep data for as long as needed to fulfil the purposes described in this policy, including the public interest scientific research purpose that underpins the DO PASTO AO PRATO initiative. At present we do not apply a fixed automatic deletion period, since the historical series matters for analysing product flows over time; this decision is reviewed periodically by our team. You can request the deletion of your personal data at any time: see how in the “Closing your account” section below.

Automated decisions

DO PASTO AO PRATO does not use automated decision-making to process personal data, nor does it carry out any profiling that produces legal effects on you.

Use by children and teenagers

The app content is rated by the app stores as suitable for all ages. However, creating an account and providing personal data are intended for users over 18. Users between 12 and under 18 may only create an account with the knowledge and specific, prominent consent of a parent or legal guardian (art. 14 of the LGPD). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 12; if we identify such collection, the corresponding data will be deleted.

Your rights

Under art. 18 of the LGPD, you may request at any time, by e-mailing dopastoaoprato@trase.earth:

Confirmation that your data is being processed;

Access to your data;

Correction of incomplete, inaccurate or outdated data;

Anonymisation, blocking or deletion of unnecessary data or data processed in breach of the LGPD;

Portability of your data to another service provider, upon express request;

Deletion of data processed on the basis of your consent;

Information about the public or private entities with which we share data;

Information about the option not to give consent and the consequences of refusing;

Withdrawal of consent.

Closing your account

To delete your account, send an e-mail with the subject “Apagar conta”, from the address linked to your account, to dopastoaoprato@trase.earth. Your contact details (name, e-mail and demographic data) will be deleted. Since app usage data is no longer linked to your identity after this process, information about scanned products is kept anonymously.

Changes to this privacy policy

We may adjust this policy in the event of platform development, legal changes or changes to the range of products and services offered. Material changes will be communicated to registered users by e-mail at least 30 days before they take effect, and published in the app and on the website. If you disagree with the changes, you may close your account at any time before the effective date; continued use after that date indicates agreement with the new version.
